Smart glasses with prescription lenses

If you wear glasses every day, the first question about any smart glasses is whether they can carry your prescription. Most can, in one of three ways: lenses made to your prescription and fitted into the frame, a clip-in insert that sits behind a display, or focus dials built into wired video glasses. Each method has its own published range, and they are not quoted the same way. Meta quotes total power, Even quotes sphere, VITURE quotes myopia only. This page explains the terms, then links to a page for each model with the official range, how to order, and what to check before paying.

What total power means

A prescription has a sphere (SPH) value for near- or farsightedness and, if you have astigmatism, a cylinder (CYL) value. Meta and Ray-Ban quote ranges as total power, which is sphere plus cylinder. Take -4.00 sphere with -2.00 cylinder: that is -6.00 total power. It fits inside the -12.00 to +6.00 range for Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 and falls outside the -4.00 to +4.00 limit for Meta Ray-Ban Display. Some prescriptions are written in plus-cylinder form; ask your optician to convert before you compare. A range quoted as sphere only, like Halliday's, says nothing about cylinder.

Why display glasses have narrower ranges

A display has to sit in front of your eye, inside or behind the lens. Every extra millimeter of lens curvature or thickness complicates that. The result shows in the numbers: Meta Ray-Ban Display stops at -4.00 to +4.00 and is single vision only, while camera-only Oakley Meta HSTN goes to -12.00 to +6.00. Even G2 is the exception among display glasses, with Even's pages quoting a wide sphere range, but its progressive lenses are offered only through Even's own stores. If you are farsighted, also check the plus side: Meta Glasses stop at +2.25.

Bonded lenses, inserts and dials

Meta, Oakley, Even and Halliday build the prescription into the glasses' own lenses, ordered through the maker or an optician. Wired display glasses mostly use inserts: XREAL ships a clip-in lens frame and sells custom lenses through its store; RayNeo names Lensology as its official partner; Snap and Samsung's Galaxy XR use removable optical inserts. Several VITURE models and Rokid Max 2 have myopia dials instead, which correct nearsightedness but not astigmatism, according to how the makers describe them. An insert can be swapped when your prescription changes. A bonded lens means a new lens order.

When published ranges disagree

Older figures stick around. A Ray-Ban prescription PDF gives -6.00 to +4.00 for Ray-Ban Meta, but Meta's current help center gives -12.00 to +6.00; the help center is the newer page and the official one. Even's product pages say -12.00 to +12.00, while its support center gives sphere from +8.00 to -12.00. VITURE's product pages and buying guide differ for the Luma Pro and Ultra. We show every conflict on the model's page with both sources, and we use the maker's most recent official page as the primary figure.

How ordering works

  1. Get a current prescription that includes sphere, cylinder, axis and pupil distance.
  2. Work out total power (sphere plus cylinder) if the model you want is quoted that way.
  3. Open the model's page below and compare your numbers with the official range and lens types.
  4. Order through the maker or a retailer the maker names, and read the return terms for custom lenses first.

Watch out for

Questions people ask

Which smart glasses take the strongest prescriptions?

Among official figures, Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta HSTN and Ray-Ban Meta Optics reach -12.00 to +6.00 total power, and Even's pages quote -12.00 to +12.00 sphere for Even G2. Rokid's press release lists plano to ±15.00D for Rokid Ai Glasses Style.

Can I use my regular glasses under wired display glasses?

Makers design for prescription inserts or built-in dials rather than glasses underneath. XREAL and VITURE include a lens frame with several models for exactly this reason.

Do any smart glasses support progressive lenses?

Ray-Ban Meta Optics (Gen 2) offers progressives through opticians, and Even G2 offers them through Even's retail stores. Meta Ray-Ban Display is single vision only.
