Device can't connect directly

Applies to ROG XREAL R1.

ROG XREAL R1 connects directly only to devices whose USB-C port carries DisplayPort Alt Mode video. Many handhelds and laptops do; many desktops, consoles and some phones do not. For those, XREAL's answer is the ROG Control Dock that comes with the R1: connect the source by HDMI or DisplayPort, link the dock to the glasses with the USB-A-to-C cable, and give the dock external power. Devices XREAL lists for a direct USB-C link include ROG Ally, Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go, iPhone 15 and 16 models, MacBook Pro and Air, ROG laptops and Android phones with DP Alt Mode. Desktop PCs, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch go through the dock.

Official steps

  1. Check whether your device supports DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C.
  2. If it doesn't, connect it through the ROG Control Dock using HDMI or DisplayPort, plus the USB-A-to-C cable and external power.

Still not working?

If the dock route also shows nothing, check every cable and the dock's power, then try another source. Contact XREAL support with the source device, its output port, the cables, and whether you connected directly or through the dock. See ROG XREAL R1.

Questions people ask

Do I need the ROG Control Dock?

Only for devices without DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C, or for HDMI and DisplayPort sources.

Which ports does the ROG Control Dock have?

Two HDMI 2.0 inputs and a DisplayPort 1.4 input, per XREAL's compatibility notes, plus the USB link to the glasses and a power input.

Can I connect a PS5 or Xbox to the R1?

Yes, through the included ROG Control Dock over HDMI. Consoles do not connect to the glasses directly.

Does the dock need its own power?

Yes. XREAL's steps for the dock route include external power alongside the USB-A-to-C link to the glasses. Without it, HDMI and DisplayPort sources may show nothing.
