What is the white light on the front? (capture LED)
Applies to Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3), Meta Glasses (Adventurer, Fury, Starfire, Capri, Nova), Ray-Ban Meta Optics (Gen 2), Oakley Meta Vanguard, Meta Ray-Ban Display, Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2), Oakley Meta HSTN, Ray-Ban Meta Audio, Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1) and Ray-Ban Stories.
The white light on the front of the frame is the capture LED. Meta and Ray-Ban describe it as an outward-facing light that signals a photo or video is being taken, or that the glasses are starting up. It blinks once for a photo and stays on while you record video. On newer models it stays off for AI camera questions that are not saved to your gallery. Meta says the camera is disabled if the glasses detect the light is blocked.
Official steps
- The front capture LED is not a camera; it is an outward-facing light that tells people nearby you are taking a photo or video (or that the glasses are starting up).
- It blinks once for a photo and stays on/blinks for as long as you record video.
- On newer models it does not light for camera-based AI requests that are not saved to your gallery (e.g. identifying a plant).
- Meta says the camera is automatically disabled if the glasses detect the LED is blocked. Be considerate: tell people when you are recording and respect places that ban recording.

Still not working?
If the LED stays on when you are not capturing, or never lights during a capture, update the glasses and app, then contact Meta support, since the light is part of how the camera is meant to work. When recording in public, tell people, and respect venues that ban cameras. Our guide to recording etiquette and the capture light covers the norms.
