Electrochromic dimming
The front lenses electronically tint (clear, shade, theater) so the picture stands out in bright light; 1S can also adjust tint automatically.[1]
Electrochromic dimming lets XREAL's lenses tint at the press of a button. Clear keeps the world visible around the virtual screen, Shade darkens it, and Theater blocks most outside light so the picture stands out, which matters most in bright rooms or outdoors. XREAL lists the levels as 0, 35 and 100 percent on its One series. The feature is on the XREAL One, One Pro, 1S, Air 2 Pro and ROG XREAL R1. The 1S adds automatic dimming that clears the lenses when you look away from the screen.

How it works
The tint is electronic, so there are no clip-on shades involved. XREAL's user guide describes a dimming button on the temple that steps through the levels; the One series quick guide also routes it through a menu: press the plus or minus button to open the Quick Panel, then use the X button to move between Brightness, Volume and Electrochromic Dimming. On the 1S, XREAL says the lenses turn transparent when you glance away and dim again when you refocus on the screen, so you can talk to someone without touching a button. On the One series, XREAL's user guide puts the control below the +/- button on the right temple: long-press either side to turn on Electrochromic Mode, then click to cycle through three levels, each confirmed after a short pause.
Turn it on
- Press the dimming button on the temple to step through the transparency levels.
Tips
- Use Theater for films and Clear when you need to see your keyboard or the people around you.
- Do not use Theater while walking; it blocks most of your view of the world.
- Don't confuse dimming with Transparency Mode. By default the Quick Button above the right temple switches to Transparency Mode, which turns the display off.
Limits
- Not on the base Air 2 or the xbx a01+, per our data and press reports.
- Automatic dimming is a 1S feature, per XREAL.
Questions people ask
Is electrochromic dimming the same as sunglasses?
No. It reduces light through the front lens to improve screen contrast. XREAL describes it as a way to make the picture stand out in bright light; our sources do not describe it as sun protection.
Which XREAL model dims automatically?
The XREAL 1S. XREAL says its lenses clear when you look away and dim again when you look back.
