Do Meta glasses work without a phone?
Partly. You need a phone and the Meta AI app to set the glasses up. After that, Ray-Ban says you can still take photos and videos, and check the battery by voice, when the app isn't connected. Meta AI, importing and updates need a connection.
Setup is phone-only. Meta says the Meta AI app is only available on mobile devices and is required for your glasses. Oakley puts it more bluntly: to operate Oakley Meta glasses you need to connect them with a smartphone and the app. The app needs a recent phone: the App Store listing asks for iOS 17.2 or later, and the Ray-Ban FAQ lists Android 10 with location services. See phone compatibility.
Without the app connected, Ray-Ban lists three things that still work: capturing photos and videos, checking battery level if you turned on voice controls, and listening to audio from a phone you are connected to over Bluetooth. The Meta Ray-Ban Display FAQ says you can take captures and use some voice controls without Wi-Fi, but need Wi-Fi for Meta AI, imports and updates.
Translation is the main exception. Some live translation languages work offline once you download their language pack in the Meta AI app, except on Ray-Ban Meta Audio. Meta lists English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and German as offline packs. Directions, calls and messages lean on your phone's connection. Plan for the phone to be along.
The Meta Neural Band is no use alone. It controls Meta Ray-Ban Display, which in turn needs the phone app. Setting up the band happens in the Meta AI app, and Meta says the app is required to use both the glasses and the band. Leave your phone at home and the band can only drive what the glasses do offline.
